Welcome!

Originally, I wanted to start this blog as a way to challenge myself to read more classic books and meaningful literature.  After looking at lists like “99 Classic Books Challenge“,  “50 Books To Read Before You Die” and “Amazon’s 100 Books to Read in a Lifetime“, I realized, much to my embarrassment, that I have read very few. (Shame! Shame!)

I believe in order to become a better writer and more well-rounded person, I should appraise notable works from history.  I have entire stories and characters developed in my head, but I have yet to actually compose them into anything that resembles a book, or any other decipherable text.

While explaining this challenge idea with my teenage daughter, I asked her to partner with me in this quest and….she agreed!  (On another shameful note, my teenage daughter has read several more classic books than I ever have!) So TOGETHER we want to expose ourselves to important literary works and movies.  Movies? Yes! Why not? There is an unlimited cinematic library available and much of it is easily accessible on Netflix. In the past two years, we have quickly become TV Serial Binge Watchers, mostly on Netflix and Hulu. We’ve discovered some excellent series that we never caught while airing and some newer shows made specifically for Netflix. (Umm, on pins and needles for the next seasons of ‘Stranger Things’, ‘Lucifer’ and ‘Daredevil’!)  It seems like an excellent opportunity to also squeeze in some older, more classic movies that I have never actually watched.

I am determined to transform my shameful, short list of read-classic novels into an accomplishment of which I can be proud! We are starting with books we both find interesting and look forward to reading.  In the case of our first novel, Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, I am attempting to read it for the third time. (Yikes! I know…Please hold your gasps)

We are planning to read our way through as many classic books as we are able, with a goal of a different one each month.  We both love reading too much to solely concentrate on classic novels, so we will also review some of our current reads and try to highlight new releases as well. Our intent is for both of us to read and post reviews on each classic book we read, providing two points of view on each; A mother’s opinion as well as her teenage daughter’s take. I hope our new blog will become a fun, yet informative book review site.  We don’t take ourselves and our opinions too seriously…note the name Casual Narrative.

Regarding movie reviews, we will concentrate on older classics.  We don’t plan on reviewing any current blockbusters, unless they were first a book. (Which is un-surprisingly quite a long list!)  Before starting this challenge idea, I had never actually seen a Marilyn Monroe movie before! (I know, more shame! Especially, since my husband and I previously owned and operated a small town movie theater!)

I completely enjoy looking at lists and seeing where I measure up compared to others. (Hopefully soon my ‘Read’ and ‘Watched’ Lists will not be so terribly sad concerning The Classics.) Please check out our Codex to get our take on some of the quirky opinions we shared about books and movies we have read or seen. (We will try to keep up with revisions after we have increased the volumes on our “Already Read” Bookshelf.)

If you have read this all the way through to this point, Thank You! I am anxious to see how this blog develops over time.  This is my first attempt at creating a blog.  I will do my best to post consistently and keep the information fun and worth your time.

Wendy
